Geothermal Greenhouses Continue to Drive Sustainable Growth
Expanding local food production through innovative, earth-heated systems
Pine Ridge Reservation —
The geothermal greenhouse project continues to demonstrate the power of sustainable innovation on the reservation. Built half-buried to capture geothermal warmth, these greenhouses stay functional year-round, helping to solve issues of food access and nutrition.
The system not only reduces heating costs, but also allows consistent vegetable and microgreen production through the winter. Dozens of families now benefit from the program, which is generating fresh produce and local employment. As community involvement grows, the greenhouses are becoming a symbol of resilience and long-term self-reliance.
Plans are underway to expand operations into new districts, using lessons learned from the pilot greenhouses to replicate success throughout the region.
