Restoring Food Sovereignty
Great Programs Funded by Our Tribal Economic Development
These great programs are what our tribal government does with money generated from economic development—hiring our people to produce goods that can be used on the reservation and sold off-reservation. One of these outstanding initiatives is LakotaGreens, a 100% Native Tribal-owned company dedicated to growing and selling organic, sustainable “superfood” MicroGreens to improve the health of our community.
Restoring Food Sovereignty
LakotaGreens is operated in Batesland, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
A key focus for the Wakpamni Lake Community is restoring Food Sovereignty. Historically, the federal government disrupted Indigenous foodways to create dependency on federally rationed foods—foods that were of poor nutritional quality and contributed to generational health issues, including diabetes. Today, Wakpamni Lake is classified as a food desert, and we are actively working to change that.
Through LakotaGreens, along with Powwow Gardens, GeoGreenKitchen, Wicozoni Wateca, and our Community and Family Gardens, we are taking direct action to restore our community’s health and food independence.
Locally Grown on Pine Ridge
LakotaGreens is cultivated in our indoor greens facility in Wakpamni Lake/Batesland, South Dakota, within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Our Food Sovereignty Project has three primary growing locations:
- Powwow Gardens – Our outdoor garden, producing seasonal crops.
- GeoGreenKitchen – A year-round, underground geothermal greenhouse for fresh food in all seasons.
- LakotaGreens – Our state-of-the-art indoor MicroGreens and BabyGreens facility.
The Greens Growing Process
Our MicroGreens and BabyGreens are grown from seeds, planted in nutrient-rich soil, and cultivated in 1020 trays with minimal water. They are stacked vertically on racks under energy-efficient LED lights. This allows us to maximize space and grow efficiently:
- MicroGreens are harvested every 8-10 days.
- BabyGreens are harvested approximately every 30 days.
- The process is then restarted, ensuring a consistent supply of fresh greens year-round.
Year-Round Growing – Even in Harsh Winters
Unlike conventional outdoor farms, LakotaGreens' indoor growing facilities and the GeoGreenKitchen’s underground geothermal greenhouse allow us to produce food all year long—even through South Dakota’s extreme winters.
Same-Day Local Delivery Means Higher Nutritional Value
One of the biggest advantages of LakotaGreens is our ability to deliver our SuperSalad the same day we harvest it. This results in a fresher, more nutritious product compared to national chains.
Scientific studies have shown that nutritional content starts to decline the moment vegetables are cut, and after seven days, many vegetables lose a significant amount of their nutrients. Most national salad mixes take at least a week to be harvested, packaged, and transported to South Dakota.
With LakotaGreens, we eliminate that delay—providing fresh, nutrient-dense greens straight from our farm to your table.
Supporting Our People, Strengthening Our Community
LakotaGreens is more than just a business—it’s part of a broader movement toward economic independence, food sovereignty, and community health. By growing our own food, we are taking back control of our nutrition and investing in a healthier future for our people.
By supporting LakotaGreens, you’re not just getting fresh, organic greens—you’re helping restore food sovereignty, create local jobs, and revitalize our tribal economy.
Join us in our mission to grow a healthier future!
