Wakpamni Lake Community History #5

Wakpamni Lake Community History #5

Located just ten miles south of the Badlands National Park in scenic southwestern South Dakota is the small, but very unique community of Wakpamni Lake. It is an unincorporated area that was originally one of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation's districts. This area is still a part of the reservation, but is no longer an official district. Today, it is home to approximately 300 residents, most of whom are members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. The community was named after Wakpa Winyan (Good River Woman), a respected Lakota woman who had a camp near the lake in the late 19th century. The lake itself is a man-made reservoir that was created in 1910 when a dam was built on the North Fork of the White River to provide water for the town of Pine Ridge. The Oglala Sioux Tribe's tribal government office is located in Wakpamni Lake, making it an important center for the reservation's administration and services. The community also has a small shopping center, a post office, a gas station, and a few other small businesses. The residents of Wakpamni Lake are primarily involved in traditional livestock ranching and farming, as well as tourism. The Badlands National Park and Black Hills are popular tourist destinations, and many residents offer tours and other services to visitors. The community also hosts an annual rodeo and powwow, which attract people from all over the region. Wakpamni Lake has a rich cultural history and is known for its connection to the Lakota way of life. Many residents still retain traditional beliefs and practices, and there are several sacred sites located within the community. The community also has a strong sense of community and pride in its heritage, which is evident in the many cultural events and celebrations that take place throughout the year. Despite its small size, Wakpamni Lake has a significant impact on the surrounding area and is an important part of the larger Oglala Sioux Tribe community. Its history, culture, and beautiful landscape make it a truly unique and special place in South Dakota.
